MYCOBACTERIUM CULTURE AND STAINING OF SPUTUM (TUBI)

To examine the Mycobacterium of sputum, three sputum samples are. The samples are taken: 1. in the morning, 2. during the day and 3. the next morning. The test is more reliable when more than one sample is examined.

Sampling

Take the sputum samples before eating. It is important that the samples are taken from as deep in the lungs as possible. Saliva does not suffice as a sample.

Give a cough and spit the sample directly into the sample container with a screw cap. Close the cap tightly. Make sure that the cap threads are properly screwed in place to prevent the container from leaking.

The name label is necessary for identifying the sample

Stick a label on to the sample containers. Write on it:

  • your name
  • your social security number
  • date of sample  time of sample

Put each sample in separate plastic bags. Close the plastic bags tightly.

You can keep the at home in a refrigerator (+2 ºC - +8 ºC). Bring all three containers to the laboratory at the same time.

Samples that have not been taken or packed correctly cannot be examined.
