EXFOLIATED SPUTUM CELLS

To examine exfoliated sputum cells, three sputum samples taken on consecutive mornings are needed. The test is more reliable when more than one sample is examined.
Sampling
Take the sputum samples in the morning before breakfast. It is important that the samples are taken from as deep in the lungs as possible. Saliva does not suffice as a sample.
Give a cough and spit the sample directly in a sample container containing cytological fixation liquid. Close the cap tightly. Mix the sample by turning the container around a few times.
The name label is necessary for identifying the sample
Stick a label on to the sample container. Write on it:
- your name
- your social security number
- date of sample
Put the sample container in a plastic bag.
You can keep the sample at home in a refrigerator (+2 ºC - +8 ºC). Bring all three containers to the laboratory at the same time.
