EXFOLIATED CELLS IN URINE

The “Exfoliated cells in urine” examination is used to assess benign and malign changes in the bladder, for example.

Sampling equipment

A clean collecting container and a sample container containing preservative (50 % dyed ethanol).

The preservative is toxic

The preservative is 50 % dyed ethanol. Keep the sample container containing preservative out of the reach of children.

Start of sampling

Empty your bladder. This urine is not collected. Next, drink approximately two glasses of water. The sample is taken 2–3 hours after drinking the water.

Sampling

Wash and dry the genitals carefully before sample collection.

Let the urine stream into the toilet as usual. Collect a midstream specimen of urine in the clean collecting container. Pour the urine in the sample container. There should be as much urine as there is preservative.

Seal the lid tightly.

Write on the container:

  • your name
  • your social security number
  • date of sample

Delivery of sample

Take the sample container to the laboratory. If you are taking several samples on several days, you can store the container in a refrigerator and deliver them all at the same time.
