SWEAT TEST

Ohje muilla kielillä: Suomi, Ruotsi

The unit responsible for your care books an appointment for a sweat test for you.

The sweat test, i.e. assay of the chloride content in sweat, is used to exclude and diagnose cystic fibrosis and monitor the effectiveness of drug therapy.

Preparing for the test

Wear a top that leaves your arms bare. The skin on the sampling site should be intact and healthy. Avoid moisturising your arms for 24 hours before the test. A good fluid balance helps ensure the test is successful.

Test process

At the start of the test, the secretion of sweat is enhanced locally by applying a low electric current to the sweat glands of the forearm. Next, sweat is collected in a collection device attached to the skin. The chloride ion content of the sweat is examined in the laboratory. The test is painless but it can be uncomfortable for a short while. The sweat test takes approximately 60 minutes.

Further information

The test is carried out at Fimlab's outpatient clinic laboratory at TAYS in Tampere (Elämänaukio 2, enter through the main entrance of TAYS). The laboratory is located at street level in building K.
