The unit responsible for your care books an appointment for an TRH stimulation test for you.

The purpose of the TRH test is to examine the functioning of the pituitary gland and thyroid gland. TRH is a hormone released by the hypothalamus that accelerates the secretion of the TSH hormone from the pituitary gland. This, in turn, increases the secretion of thyroxine from the thyroid gland.

Eating influences the test result

Avoid drinking coffee, tea or hot chocolate starting from the previous evening to the end of the test.

Medication influences the test result

Certain medications influence the test result. Consult your attending physician about the discontinuation of medication before the TRH test.

Alcohol influences the test result

It is recommended to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.

Stress influences the test result

Avoid physical exertion that causes sweating for 24 hours before the test.

Mental stress can also influence the test result. Inform the laboratory assistant taking your blood samples if you suffer from stress, depression etc.

Blood samples

At the start of the test, a blood sample is taken and you are given an TRH injection. After this, another blood sample is taken after 20 and 60 minutes.

You must stay at the sample collection facility during the entire testing process.
