The sample is examined for viruses, micro-organisms or helminth eggs.

Sampling

Defecate on a suitable surface from which a sample can be taken, for example disposable plate and spoon.

If the examination request is for a parasite nucleic acid assay (F -ParaNhO) or nucleic acid assay of diarrheal viruses in stool (F -VirNhO), put the sample in an empty stools container.

  •  Put almost a teaspoon (3-4 ml) of watery diarrhoeic stools in the container.

OR

  •  Put approximately half a teaspoon of solid stools in the container.

Close the container tightly and put the sample container in a plastic bag.

If the examination request is for a parasite assay (F -Para-O), put the sample in a stools container with 10 ml of 10% formalin.

  • Put the same amount of watery diarrhoeic stools in the container as there is formalin. Ratio: one part stools and one part formalin. Mix the sample well with the liquid. Close the container tightly.

OR

  • Put approximately a dab of solid stools as big as the tip of your thumb in the container. Take the sample from both inside and outside the stools. Ratio: one part stools and five parts formalin. Close the container tightly. Shake the closed container strongly.

Put the sample container inside a plastic bag.

The name label is necessary for identifying the sample

Stick a label on to the sample container. Write on it:

  • your name
  • your social security number
  • date of sample

Deliver the sample to the laboratory for testing.

The samples keep for three days at a refrigerator temperature.
